L. Linkevičius: We support initiatives to develop international standards in the field of transport
On 28 October, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the Secretary General of the Intergovernmental Organisation for International Carriage by Rail (OTIF) Wolfgang Küpper.
“Lithuania is at the crossroads of international transport flows. Therefore, we support initiatives to develop common international standards in the field of transport. Lithuania, in cooperation with Latvia, Estonia, and Poland, is currently implementing the Rail Baltica project, which will allow to better integrate the Baltic states into the European rail network. The implementation of this rail transport infrastructure project will also attach more importance to OTIF’s role in the region,” said L. Linkevičius.
The Symposium “20th Anniversary of the Vilnius Protocol: OTIF’s achievements and prospects” is held in Vilnius on 28 and 29 October. The event has brought together representatives from 46 member countries, as well as leaders of other international European economic, transport and logistics organizations. The Foreign Minister was glad that the symposium was taking place in Vilnius. According to L. Linkevičius, the Vilnius Protocol remains an important legal basis for international carriage by rail 20 years after its adoption.
OTIF’s General Assembly in Vilnius adopted the Vilnius Protocol on 3 June 1999. It was a major milestone in the development of international railway law.
