Lithuania Made a Statement at the UNHCR Executive Committee Session
On 3 October the Permanent Mission’s of the Republic of Lithuania to the UN Office and other International Organizations in Geneva Third secretary Jorune Martinaviciute made a statement at the 69th session of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Executive Committee.
Lithuania’s statement included an expression of support to the UNHCR and its workers in tackling forced displacement crises worldwide and aiming to ensure international protection of refugees, especially in insecure working environments. Moreover, the effective human rights protection of the refugees was emphasised. While thanking the UNHCR for the development of the Global Compact on Refugees, Lithuania underlined that improved coordination and coherence between all relevant UN agencies and other international and regional organisations that deal with asylum seekers and refugees will contribute to the development of a more effective global policy based on responsibility sharing and cooperation.
Lithuania has also urged not to lose from sight internally displaced persons, especially the situation in Ukraine where most of the internally displaced persons are children and the elderly, who are particularly vulnerable. Lithuania also expressed support for UNHCR activities in Ukraine in providing legal protection and other assistance for displaced persons.
UNHCR Executive Committee meets in Geneva annually in October to review and approve the agency’s programmes and budget, to approve proposed biennial budget targets, and in cooperation with the UNHCR’s intergovernmental and non-governmental partners to discuss the High Commissioner's exercise of functions and to discuss such important asylum and protection issues as regional activities, emergency preparedness, and international protection. Executive Committe is now comprised of 102 Member States.
