Lithuanian delegation takes part in the development of the Global Compact on Refugees
Lithuanian delegation, led by Vice-minister of the Interior Giedrius Surplys, participated at the tenth annual UN High Commissioner’s for Refugees Dialogue on Protection Challenges, which took place on 12 and 13 December 2017 in Geneva. This year’s Dialogue on the theme of “Towards a Global Compact on Refugees” serves as a stocktaking conference to assess outcomes of the extensive consultations held with a wide range of actors in the course of 2017 on the development of the global compact. The Dialogue also brings together the lessons learned from the application of the Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework (CRRF) in various contexts.
In his statement, Vice-minister G. Surplys affirmed Lithuania‘s strong support for the process leading to the preparation of the Global Compact on Refugees. He stressed that addressing the root causes of displacement should be the main priority and that the global compact should include efforts to develop the preparedness of potential host countries, while responsibility and burden sharing and protection of the human rights should remain a crosscutting policy priority.
With the adoption of the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants on 19 September 2016, the international community reaffirmed the importance of strengthening the response to large movements of refugees and migrants. The New York Declaration called upon UNHCR to initiate the application of a comprehensive refugee response framework (CRRF) and develop a Global Compact on Refugees, which will be presented in 2018.
