Digitization of archives relevant to Lithuania was finalized in the UNOG library
On 26 May, completing the first stage of digitization of the documents related to the Lithuanian membership in the League of Nations, the Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the UN Rytis Paulauskas and the Director of the Central Archive of the State Dalius Žižys had a meeting with the Chief Librarian and Chairman at UNOG David Chikvaidze.
D. Chikvaidze highlighted the fact that Lithuania is the first state to implement such a project. Even though many states are interested in and even signatories of agreements on document digitization in the UN Archive, Lithuania was the first to ensure that the undertaking is implemented in reality. It was noted in addition that this is a significant input of Lithuania to the preservation of the historical heritage of the League of Nations.
R. Paulauskas, D. Chikvaidze and Blandine Blukacz-Louisfert, Chief of Institutional Memory Section in the UNOG Library, exchanged opinions on further intentions of the spread of information, including also the academic community. During the meeting, opportunities to hold the document exhibition and share experience with representatives of other states were discussed in order for this initiative to be developed by other nations. After the documents digitized by Lithuanian archive specialists are further edited and their descriptions prepared, they will be published on the UNOG Library website. D. Žižys expressed his gratefulness to the UNOG Library for the unique opportunity to participate in the digitization of 1920-1940 documents relevant to Lithuania.
The process of digitization started on 28 April, when the team comprising specialists from the central archive of Lithuania arrived. Overall, 36 338 documents were digitized, which were then carefully preserved and stored at the UNOG Archive. The archive of the League of Nations is included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Registry.
