Discussions are being held in Geneva on nuclear non-proliferation issues

The Preparatory Committee for the 2020 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) is holding its second session from 23 April to 4 May 2018 in Geneva. At the general debate Ms Jorūnė Martinavičiūtė, Third Secretary of Lithuanian Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office and Other International Organizations in Geneva delivered Lithuania‘s national statement which stressed Lithuania‘s resolute and continuous efforts to seek successful implementation of NPT goals in the fields of nuclear non-proliferation, nuclear disarmament and peaceful use of nuclear energy.

The statement underlined the importance of partnership between nuclear weapon states and non-nuclear weapon states seeking to implement NPT goals, as well as practical systematic approach within the existent framework of treaties and states’ obligations.

The statement also focused on the relations between nuclear security and safety which are especially important for the implementation of nuclear energy projects in neighbouring countries and mitigating the risk of proliferation, stressed the role of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in strengthening NPT system.

In preparation for the 2020 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) three preparatory sessions will be held in Vienna, Geneva and New York.

Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) is an international treaty which seeks to prevent the development of nuclear weapons and the proliferation of related technologies while promoting peaceful use of nuclear energy and seeking nuclear disarmament. The NPT entered into force in 1970 and was extended indefinitely in 1995.
