Humanitarian situation in Ukraine discussed at the meeting with the ICRC President
On 4 May, the Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the UN Office and other International Organisations in Geneva Ambassador Darius Stanulis met with the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Peter Maurer. They main focus of the meeting was Russia‘s aggression against Ukraine and ICRC‘s activities in this context.
„The international community should unite its efforts in helping and supporting the victims of Russia‘s war. Thanks to its neutrality and impartiality, ICRC‘s role in ensuring the compliance with the international humanitarian law is crucial“, - said D. Staniulis.
Ambassador thanked the ICRC for its efforts in implementing humanitarian corridors, as well as ensuring humanitarian access, and encouraged to continue this important work. He also emphasized that the consequences of the war will be global, long-lasting and will have an effect on all future conflicts.
ICRC is an independent and neutral humanitarian organisation, established in 1863 and based in Geneva. Its mandate stems from the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and relates to ensuring compliance with the international humanitarian law and providing protection and assistance for victims of armed conflicts. ICRC is an important part of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement that consists of ICRC, National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
