In Geneva, Lithuania Facilitates Cooperation between ILO and CEDAW
On 15 November 2017, the Permanent Representative of Lithuania in Geneva, Ambassador Andrius Krivas, hosted a working breakfast event at the International Labour Organization (ILO) for the members and secretariat of the UN Committee on Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) with ILO officials in charge of the gender dimension in the work of the organization.
At the event, the ILO was represented by the Director of the Conditions of Work and Equality Department, Ms. Manuela Tomei, and her colleagues. They presented the gender perspective in the ILO agenda and underlined that decent employment is key to women’s economic empowerment. Particular focus was placed on the persisting large pay gap (23 per cent) between men and women for equal work and on the gender component in combatting trafficking in human beings and forced labour.
Lithuania organized this event in support of the initiative of the CEDAW Chairperson, Professor Dalia Leinartė, to enhance her Committee’s cooperative outreach to the international organizations in Geneva, all of which, in their respective areas, address the problem of discrimination against women.
The breakfast discussion is expected to give an impulse toward regular cooperation between CEDAW and ILO.
Gender equality and protection of women against discrimination and violence constitute one of Lithuania's highest political priorities in the context of multilateral diplomacy.
