In Geneva, Lithuania makes a statement on technical assistance to Georgia
On 26 September 2019, the Delegation of Lithuania took the floor at the 42nd session of the Human Rights Council in the general debate on technical assistance and capacity building. The Permanent Representative of Lithuania Ambassador Andrius Krivas expressed Lithuania’s support for the work of OHCHR in providing technical assistance to Georgia and commended Georgia’s close cooperation with the OHCHR.
Lithuania is deeply concerned that human rights situation in Russia-occupied Georgian regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia continues to deteriorate, particularly due to continued so-called “borderisation”, ethnic Georgians living in those territories face multiple forms of discrimination, no progress has been made regarding access for international human rights monitors.
The Geneva-based Human Rights Council was established in 2006. Its 47 members are elected from among the UN Member States. Lithuania takes part in the work of the HRC as an observer. Lithuania has presented its candidacy to the Human Rights Council for the term 2022-2024.
