In Geneva, Lithuania makes a statement on the human rights situation in Ukraine

On 20 March, 2019 the Delegation of Lithuania took the floor at the 40th session of the Human Rights Council in interactive dialogue with the Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights on the situation of human rights in Ukraine.

The Permanent Representative of Lithuania Ambassador Andrius Krivas expressed Lithuania’s deep concern about gross violations of human rights by Russian de facto authorities in illegally occupied Crimea and in Ukraine’s Donbas region as well as about the consistent denial of the OHCHR access to these areas.

Lithuania called for immediate release of all Ukrainian citizens illegally detained by Russia, including Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov and civic activist Volodymyr Balukh, as well as the 24 Ukrainian seamen who were taken prisoner in Russia’s attack on Ukrainian navy vessels in the Kerch straight last November.

The Geneva-based Human Rights Council was established in 2006. Its 47 members are elected from among the UN Member States. Lithuania takes part in the work of the HRC as an observer. Lithuania has presented its candidacy to the Human Rights Council for the term 2022-2024.
