In Geneva, Lithuania takes floor in interactive dialogue on human rights situation in Belarus
On 25 June 2018, the Delegation of Lithuania took the floor at the 38th Human Rights Council session in the interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Belarus.
Acknowledging limited positive developments in Belarus and interaction with international institutions, the Lithuanian representative agreed with Special Rapporteur that there had been no substantial improvement of human rights situation in Belarus. Belarus continues to use death penalty, widespread discrimination is rampant and fundamental rights are being suppressed. The recently adopted amendments to the media laws will further curtail the right to freedom of expression.
The Geneva-based Human Rights Council was established in 2006. Its 47 members are elected from among the UN Member States. Lithuania takes part in the work of the HRC as observer. Lithuania has presented its candidacy to the Human Rights Council for the term 2022-2024.
