In Geneva, Lithuania takes floor in interactive dialogue on human rights situation in Myanmar

On 18 September 2018, the Delegation of Lithuania took the floor at the 39th Human Rights Council session in the interactive dialogue with the Fact-Finding Mission in Myanmar. In addition to aligning himself with the EU Statement which resolutely condemned atrocities committed by Myanmar military against the Rohingya minority, The Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva Ambassador Andrius Krivas expressed his country’s deep concern over the continuous erosion of the freedom of expression in Myanmar, which fuels violence and human rights violations.

Lithuania joined the High Commissioner’s call on Myanmar to immediately and unconditionally release Kyaw Soe Oo and Thet Oo Maung, the two Reuters journalists imprisoned for their investigative work on the Inn Din massacre of Rohingyas, cease the harassment and immediately release journalists and other civil society actors, and review the ill-defined laws that restrict the freedom of expression.

Ambassador urged Myanmar to abide by its international obligations and to ensure the full realisation of the right to freedom of opinion and expression which is vital for promoting a concept of Myanmar that is inclusive, based on equality and respect for human rights for all.

The Geneva-based Human Rights Council was established in 2006. Its 47 members are elected from among the UN Member States. Lithuania takes part in the work of the HRC as observer. Lithuania has presented its candidacy to the Human Rights Council for the term 2022-2024.
