In Geneva, Lithuania takes floor in interactive dialogue with the High Commissioner for Human Rights on the human rights situation in Ukraine

On 3 July, the Delegation of Lithuania took the floor at the 38th Human Rights Council session in interactive dialogue with the High Commissioner for Human Rights on the situation of human rights in Ukraine.

Lithuania expressed its deep concern about widespread systematic violations and abuses of human rights by Russian de facto authorities in illegally occupied Crimea and by Russia backed separatist armed groups in Ukraine’s Donbas region. The root cause of a deplorable human rights situation is Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, which led to internal displacement of 1.6 million people, thousands of deaths and injuries, and immense suffering of civilians. Lithuanian delegation invited the High Commissioner to prepare a thematic report assessing the human rights situation of the Crimean Tatars since the illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia. Reiterating its firm support to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, Lithuanian delegation called on Russia to adhere to international law, ensure humanitarian access to the affected areas and to grant international human rights monitors unhindered access to Ukraine‘s Donbas and Crimea.

The Geneva-based Human Rights Council was established in 2006. Its 47 members are elected from among the UN Member States. Lithuania takes part in the work of the HRC as observer. Lithuania has presented its candidacy to the Human Rights Council for the term 2022-2024.
