In Geneva, Lithuania takes floor in interactive dialogue with the High Commissioner for Human Rights on the human rights situation in Ukraine

On 25 September, 2018 the Delegation of Lithuania took a floor at the 39th Human Rights Council session in interactive dialogue with the High Commissioner for Human Rights on the situation of human rights in Ukraine. Lithuania expressed its deep concern about widespread systematic violations and abuses of human rights by Russian de facto authorities in illegally occupied Crimea and by Russia backed separatist armed groups in Ukraine’s Donbas region.

Lithuania firmly condemned the politically motivated prosecutions of Ukrainian citizens in illegally annexed Crimea, including Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov and called on Russian authorities to release all Ukrainian political prisoners held by Russia.

Reiterating its firm support to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, Lithuanian delegation called on Russia to adhere to international law, to grant international human rights monitors unhindered access to Ukraine‘s Donbas and Crimea.

The Geneva-based Human Rights Council was established in 2006. Its 47 members are elected from among the UN Member States. Lithuania takes part in the work of the HRC as observer. Lithuania has presented its candidacy to the Human Rights Council for the term 2022-2024.
