In Geneva, Lithuania took the floor in interactive dialogue on human rights situation in Myanmar
On 11 March 2019, the Delegation of Lithuania took the floor at the 40th Human Rights Council session in the interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, Ms. Yanghee Lee. The Permanent Representative of Lithuania Ambassador Andrius Krivas expressed his country’s deep concern over the shrinking democracy space in Myanmar, continuous erosion of the freedom of expression, attacks against journalists and human rights defenders.
Lithuania once again joined the High Commissioner’s and Special Rapporteur’s calls on Myanmar to immediately release Reuters journalists imprisoned for their bringing Inn Din massacre of Rohingyas to light. Lithuania urged Myanmar to guarantee freedoms of opinion, expression, assembly and association which are vital for making the Myanmar society truly inclusive and based on equality and respect for human rights for all.
The Geneva-based Human Rights Council was established in 2006. Its 47 members are elected from among the UN Member States. Lithuania takes part in the work of the Council as an observer. Lithuania has presented its candidacy to the Human Rights Council for the term 2022 – 2024.
