In Geneva, Lithuania took the floor in the HRC interactive dialogue on human rights situation in Belarus
On 2 July 2019, at the 41st session of the Human Rights Council the Permanent Representative of Lithuania Ambassador Andrius Krivas took the floor in the interactive dialogue with UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Belarus Anaïs Marin.
Lithuania expressed its great concern over denied access to the Special Rapporteur and over the lack of substantial changes in the restrictive human rights environment in Belarus, as noted in the Special Rapporteur’s report. Continued use of death penalty, curtailing the rights to freedoms of expression, of assembly and association, interference with the work of human rights defenders, independent journalists and media, disproportionate sentences for children and other human rights violations confirm the need to continue addressing the human rights situation in Belarus at the Human Rights Council.
The Geneva-based Human Rights Council was established in 2006. Its 47 members are elected from among the UN Member States. Lithuania takes part in the work of the Council as observer. Lithuania has presented its candidacy to the Human Rights Council for the term 2022-2024.
