Lithuania allocated funds for humanitarian aid to Syria, Mali, Somalia and Guatemala
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania will make a contribution of 60.000 Euros for humanitarian aid, out of which 20.000 Euros will be allocated through the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to humanitarian assistance programme in Syria, 15.000 Euros through the World Food Programme (WFP) to humanitarian assistance programmes in Mali and Somalia, and 10.000 Euros to the government of Guatemala to provide humanitarian assistance to victims of a volcanic eruption.
Lithuanian humanitarian actions are coordinated with the actions of the European Union, the United Nations, and other humanitarian organizations and actors.
The funds allocated to the UNHCR are aimed at contributing to the provision of humanitarian assistance to Syrian refugees that currently amount to 5.6 million in the region, of which almost half are children. According to the UN figures released in 2018, the need for humanitarian aid in Syria amounts to USD 3.513 billion.
The funds allocated to the World Food Programme are intended for the provision of humanitarian food aid to Somalia and Mali. Every month WPT assists 1.67 million Somali and 0.35 million Mali inhabitants, respectively. According to the UN, the need for humanitarian aid in Somalia amounts to USD 1.54 billion, and in Mali – USD 0.329 billion.
The humanitarian aid to the government of the Republic of Guatemala is granted directly in response to the official assistance request by the State, as well as considering the grave consequences of the volcanic eruption that affected 1.7 million inhabitants.
In 2018, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania has allocated the total of 245.000 Euros to humanitarian aid, directed to Ukraine, Yemen, Syria, Somalia, Mali, Guatemala, Palestinian refugees and the UNHCR.
