Lithuania allocates funds in support of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights
In order to support the efforts of the United Nations in ensuring respect for the human rights, Lithuania has allocated 30 thousand euros to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
The OHCHR is the main UN institution in te field of human rights. Lithuania has been supporting its activities with voluntary contributions. A part of this year’s allocation, which was transferred on April 24, is dedicated to the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and of Association that this year marks its 10th anniversary. Lithuania, together with the Czech Republic, Indonesia, Maldives and Mexico, is in the core group of countries that presented the resolution of the Human Rights Council on Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and of Association, which established the mandate of the Special Rapporteur. In summer of 2019, the Human Rights Council by consensus adopted the resolution that extended the above mentioned mandate for the upcoming three years.
Lithuania believes that in the context of Covid-19 it is crucial that the response efforts are based on human rights, ensure rights of the most vulnerable groups and provide access to reliable information. Effective exercise of human rights and freedoms contributes to the consolidation of democratic values, peace and security, prevents aggression, humanitarian crises and reduces crime rates and discrimination.
