Lithuania and partners in Geneva host a webinar "Media under attack in Belarus"

On June 24, the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Lithuania in Geneva, in cooperation with the non-governmental organizations PEN America and the Human Rights House Foundation, is organizing a virtual high-level event "Attack on the media in Belarus: International action needed as human rights crisis intensifies” at the 47th session of the Human Rights Council (HRC).

The discussion is aimed at drawing the attention of the international community to the constantly deteriorating human rights situation in Belarus and at identifying concrete possible actions to protect freedom of opinion and expression. The extension of the mandate of the United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Belarus and the Interactive dialogue with the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression are on the agenda of the current HRC session.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Gabrielius Landsbergis, together with the European Union’s Special Representative for Human Rights Eamon Gilmore, and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs from the co-sponsoring countries Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, and high-ranking officials from Slovakia and the United States, will address the audience. Among panelists the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Belarus, Ms. Anais Marin; mother of the Belarusian blogger Ramanas Protasevičius, who was arrested in Belarus for illegally landing a Ryanair plane flying to Vilnius; well-known Belarusian journalist Hanna Liubakova and representatives of non-governmental organizations.
