Lithuania announced humanitarian assistance to Yemen
On 3 April, a High-level pledging event for the Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen, organised by the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) together with the Governments of Sweden and Switzerland, took place at the United Nations Office in Geneva. As the armed conflict continues, Yemen remains the largest humanitarian crisis in the world, where a record 22.2 million people, or 75 percent of the population, are now in need of humanitarian assistance – 3.4 million more than last year.
During the pledging event, Lithuania expressed its deep concern over the humanitarian situation in Yemen, and especially the consequences the continued conflict inflicts on Yemen’s civilian population. It was noted that Lithuania continues to support international humanitarian organisations and humanitarian staff, and urges to grant unrestricted access to sea and airports for urgent provision of humanitarian assistance, as well as to seek political solutions to the conflict. At the event, Lithuania announced its pledge of 20 000 euros for the Yemen Humanitarian Pooled Fund in 2018, an un-earmarked contribution which will be directed to humanitarian aid programmes according to the most urgent needs.
