On 28 June 2019, the Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the UN Office and other International Organizations in Geneva Ambassador Andrius Krivas delivered a statement on behalf of the Nordic and Baltic countries in the annual discussion on the human rights of women at the 41st session of the UN Human Rights Council.
The statement emphasises the need to ensure the protection of older women’s enjoyment of human rights. Intrinsic gender inequalities and discrimination against women have a disproportionate and cumulative impact on older women’s rights. Although women’s economic empowerment has been receiving increasing attention from the international community, the older women’s rights in practice are still invisible to policymakers, both at national and global levels.
The Geneva-based Human Rights Council was established in 2006. Its 47 members are elected from among the UN Member States. Lithuania takes part in the work of the Council as observer. Lithuania has presented its candidacy to the Human Rights Council for the term 2022-2024.
