Lithuania Delivers Nordic - Baltic Statement at Human Right Council
On 13 September 2018, the Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva Ambassador Andrius Krivas delivered a statement on behalf of the Nordic and Baltic countries in the High-Level Panel Discussion on the 70th Anniversary of the Convention on the Prevention of Genocide, which was held at the 39th session of the UN Human Rights Council.
In his speech, Ambassador emphasised that although much progress had been made in the fight against impunity for the perpetrators of atrocity crimes, impunity was still all too common. International community needs not only more robust accountability mechanisms but also a focus on prevention. The Human Rights Council and other Geneva-based human rights mechanisms are particularly well suited to recognise early warning signs of genocide and other mass atrocity crimes. On behalf of the Nordic and Baltic countries Ambassador urged all states that were not yet party to the Genocide Convention to ratify or accede to it.
The Geneva-based Human Rights Council was established in 2006. Its 47 members are elected from among the UN Member States. Lithuania takes part in the work of the Council as observer. Lithuania has presented its candidacy to the Human Rights Council for the term 2022-2024.
