Lithuania Facilitates Cooperation between WHO and CEDAW

On 17 July 2018, the Permanent Mission of Lithuania to the UN Office and other International Organizations in Geneva together with UN Committee on Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and World Health Organization (WHO) organised a working lunch to discuss the gender perspective in the WHO agenda. At the invitation by the Permanent Representative of Lithuania Ambassador Andrius Krivas, the event was attended by CEDAW Chairperson Prof. Dalia Leinartė, WHO Assistant Director-General for Family, Women, Children and Adolescents Dr. Princess Nothemba (Nono) Simelela, members of CEDAW as well as WHO officials in charge of the gender dimension in the work of the organization.

The working lunch is one of series of events organised by Lithuania in support of the initiative of the CEDAW Chairperson, Prof. Dalia Leinartė, to enhance her Committee’s cooperative outreach to the international organizations in Geneva, all of which, in their respective areas, address the problem of discrimination against women. The discussions with International Labour Organization (ILO) and World Health Organization (WHO)  will give an impulse toward their regular cooperation with CEDAW.

Gender equality and protection of women against discrimination and violence constitute one of Lithuania's highest political priorities in the context of multilateral diplomacy and are key priorities of Lithuania’s candidacy campaign for the UN Human Rights Council for the term 2022 – 2024.
