Lithuania hosts reception in Geneva in honor of the UN Committee on Elimination of Discrimination against Women

On 8 November 2018, the Lithuanian Permanent Mission to the UN Office and other International Organizations in Geneva organized a reception on the occasion of the 71st session of the UN Committee on Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) which is the last session chaired by Prof. Dalia Leinartė of Lithuania who has been leading the Committee for two years.

The event was attended by CEDAW Chairperson Prof. Dalia Leinartė and other members of the Committee, Vice-President of the Human Rights Council Permanent Representative of the Philippines Amb. Evan P. García, other Heads and diplomatic staff members of Permanent Missions in Geneva, officials from UNOG, OHCHR and CEDAW Secretariat, and other guests. In his welcoming speech Ambassador Andrius Krivas expressed appreciation for Prof. Dalia Leinartė’s successful chairpersonship and for her efforts in protecting women’s rights at international fora as well as in Lithuania. Emphasising that elimination of discrimination against women is one of the Lithuania’s key policy priorities in the area of human rights, the Ambassador reiterated Lithuania’s strong support to the CEDAW mandate.

Supporting Prof. Dalia Leinartė’s initiative to enhance CEDAW’s cooperative outreach to the international organizations in Geneva, Lithuania helped organize CEDAW’s expert discussions with the World Health Organization and International Labour Organization, which provided an impulse toward their regular cooperation with the Committee and found reflection in the Committee’s recommendations and country reviews. In June, Lithuania hosted a multi-stakeholder expert seminar initiated by the CEDAW Chairperson in support of the Committee’s ongoing effort to develop a general recommendation on combatting trafficking in women and girls in the context of global migration.

Gender equality and protection of women against discrimination and violence constitute one of Lithuania's highest political priorities in the context of multilateral diplomacy and are key priorities of Lithuania’s candidacy campaign for the UN Human Rights Council for the term 2022 – 2024.
