Lithuania Joins Equal Rights Coalition
On 8 June 2017, Lithuania joined the Equal Rights Coalition (ERC) that held its meeting at the Netherlands Permanent Mission in Geneva. Malta was admitted as a member on the same occasion. The ERC an organization of now 35 countries that supports full societal inclusion of LGBTI persons as equals in rights and dignity.
The Coalition is currently co-chaired by Uruguay and the Netherlands and promotes close cooperation between governments and civil society in pursuit of its noble objective.
Upon signing the Founding Principles of the ERC on behalf of Lithuania, Ambassador Andrius Krivas expressed pride in being part of the ERC and noted the recent bold decision of the Lithuanian Government to grant asylum to several LGBTI refugees from Chechnya, Russia who experienced persecution, hatred, discrimination and physical violence at home because of their sexual orientation.
