Lithuania Made a Statement at the IOM Council Session
On 6 December the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Lithuania to the UN Office and other International Organizations Ambassador Andrius Krivas made a statement at the 107th session of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Council. The Ambassador congratulated the IOM on its 65th anniversary, which was commemorated on 5 December.
The Ambassador expressed Lithuania’s support to the IOM in addressing migration crises and to its lead role in developing a Global Compact for Migration, which will be the next important step toward better cooperation among member states and international organizations in migration management. He stressed that Lithuania would further support joint international efforts to solve the refugee and migration crisis.
He also urged not to forget the situation in Ukraine, where due to a neighbour country’s aggression currently more than 1.7 million persons are internally displaced. Their increasing vulnerability to human trafficking and the lack of long-term solutions continues to be a cause for great concern. The Ambassador expressed support for IOM activities in helping and supporting the host communities in their efforts to provide IDPs with shelter, healthcare, education and employment opportunities.
