Lithuania Made Statements at the 33rd Session of the UN Human Rights Council
During the 33rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, 13 - 30 September 2016, Lithuania made statements in the interactive dialogues on indigenous peoples and on Ukraine.
Lithuania spoke out against human rights violations in Ukraine's Crimean peninsula illegally annexed by Russia. The indigenous Crimean Tatar community is persecuted by the occupation authorities. Their self-governing body Mejlis has been portrayed as an "extremist organisation" and its activities have been prohibited.
Lithuania urges Russian de facto authorities in Crimea to fully comply with international human rights standards and other obligations under international law.
Lithuania firmly supports Ukraine's independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and European choice.
