Lithuania made statements on persons with disabilites and children in armed conflicts during HRC session
During the 34th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, which is taking place on February 27 – March 24, Lithuania made statements during interactive dialogues on persons with disabilities and children and armed conflict.
Lithuania underlined that it is particularly important to include persons with disabilities into political life. Justas Džiugelis, a person with disability, was elected to the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania last year. His electoral campaign was effectively supported, among others, by Professor Jonas Ruškus, Lithuanian member of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Lithuania has presented Professor Ruškus‘s candidacy for re-election to the Committee next year.
2016 was marked by horrific atrocities, with thousands of children being killed, maimed and used for combat, even in the European continent, namely in the Russian backed separatist‘s controlled areas in the Eastern Ukraine. Lithuania urged to attach greater importance to specific impacts of armed conflicts on girls, as they are used for sexual exploitation or forced into marriage.
