On 8 November 2017, Lithuanian representative took the floor at the UN human rights Universal Periodic Review (UPR) session on Guatemala.

Lithuania welcomed Guatemala’s commitment and progress made in strengthening its human rights protection system. For the new UPR cycle, Lithuania provided the following recommendations to Guatemala: to institutionally ensure access to justice for all women who have become victims of violence; to adopt a framework for the protection of media professionals based on the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity; to closely cooperate with the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala and to foresee protection measures for human rights defenders in accordance with international commitments.

At the session, Guatemala received recommendations on improving various aspects of the human rights situation from over 70 fellow UN Member States. The Universal Periodic Review is one of the main UN instruments in seeking high standards of implementation of human rights on a global scale.
