Lithuania presented national plan towards achieving the UN sustainable development goals

On 1 March, the Lithuanian delegation presented its national plan of action towards achieving UN 2030 agenda and towards seeking sustainable development goals at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) regional forum on sustainability goals in Geneva. Permanent representative of Lithuania to the UN Office in Geneva Andrius Krivas encouraged UNECE Member States to pay more attention to the economic empowerment of women when seeking to achieve UN sustainable development goals. He pointed out that 60% of employees in the small and medium enterprises in Lithuania are women. Such enterprises largely contribute to the productivity of many countries, therefore, it is important to pay more attention to reflect appropriately gender equality issue in the legal systems of the countries of UNECE region.  

The Ambassador particularly stressed Lithuania’s determination to implement Paris Climate Agreement and further plans to reduce the effect of climate change when switching to the usage of more renewable energy sources, as well as increasing energy efficiency including the renovation of old apartment buildings.

A renewed Lithuania’s development cooperation system was presented in the discussion as well, which is aiming to increase the effectiveness and quality of the support provided.
