Lithuania presents its progress in the field of human rights at the UPR pre-session
On 7 December, Chargé d'Affaires of Lithuania in Geneva Mr. Donatas Tamulaitis took part in the pre-session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR 40) and presented Lithuania's progress in the field of human rights.
The accreditation of the Seimas Ombudsperson’s Office as a national human rights institution in accordance with the Paris Principles, the criminalization of torture in conformity with the United Nations Convention against Torture, the complete prohibition of corporal punishment of children are only few of the significant achievements in ensuring better protection of human rights in the country.
One of the key challenges in meeting the highest standards of human rights protection remains the COVID-19 pandemic, which requires focused efforts to address the human rights constraints and challenges such as domestic violence and gender-based violence against women.
The Chargé d'Affaires emphasized that Lithuania is firmly committed to participate actively in the implementation of the agenda for the protection of fundamental human rights.
