Lithuania Proposes Human Rights Recommendations to Pakistan and to Zambia
On 13 November 2017, Lithuanian representative took the floor at the UN human rights Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group meetings on Pakistan and on Zambia.
For the new UPR cycle, Lithuania has offered Pakistan the following recommendations: to amend national legislation on defamation and blasphemy in accordance with international human rights law; to enhance training of judiciary and law-enforcement agents on fighting violence against women; and to re-establish moratorium on death penalty.
To Zambia, Lithuania has recommended: to repeal or amend the criminal defamation clauses in its penal code, so their application does not restrict the freedom of expression; to adopt specific legislation to provide women sufficient protection against all discriminatory practices; and to ratify the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.
The Universal Periodic Review is one of the main UN instruments in seeking high standards of implementation of human rights on a global scale.
