Lithuania Provides Human Rights Recommendations to Ukraine

On 15 November 2017, Lithuanian delegation took the floor at the UN human rights Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group meeting on Ukraine, in the framework of the 28th session of the UPR.

Lithuania pointed out that since the start of the illegal occupation of Crimea by Russia and the Russia-designed armed conflict in Ukraine’s Donbas, the violations of human rights and international humanitarian law have become routine in those parts of Ukraine, which are de facto controlled by Russia. In these circumstances, Lithuania recommended that Ukraine continue to seek effective ways, through international mechanisms, to hold to account those responsible for such violations. Lithuania also recommended Ukraine to consider ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court; and of the Council of Europe Istanbul Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence.

At the session, Ukraine received friendly recommendations on various aspects of the human rights from almost 80 UN Member States. The Universal Periodic Review is one of the main UN instruments in seeking high standards of implementation of human rights on a global scale.
