Lithuania Seeks Re-election to ITU Council and Presents Candidate for Director of Radiocommunications Sector

On 22 May, at the 2017 session of the Council of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Permanent Prepresentative of Lithuania to the UN Office and other International Organizations in Geneva Ambassador Andrius Krivas presented Dr. Mindaugas Žilinskas, Deputy Director of the Communications Regulatory Authority of Lithuania, as candidate to the post of Director of the ITU Radiocommunications Sector (ITU-R) for the term of 2019-2022. This is the first time Lithuania presents a candidate for such a high-level position in the ITU leadership structure. 

Dr. Mindaugas Žilinskas has 30 years of experience in the field of radiocommunitations regulation. In 2006-2014, he served two consecutive terms as a Member of the ITU Radio Regulations Board (RRB).  In 2009, Dr. Mindaugas Žilinskas was elected as RRB Vice-Chairman and in 2010 as RRB Chairman. During his membership in the RRB, Dr. Žilinskas dealt with various questions of radiocommunications and contributed to the successful settlement of radio interferences issue between ITU Member States.

At the same plenary meeting of the ITU Council, Ambassador Krivas also announced the decision of the Government of Lithuania to seek re-election to the ITU Council for the period of 2019-2022.

Elections to the ITU Council as well as to the ITU management will take place at the 2018 ITU Plenipotentiary Conference, to be held from 26 October to 16 November 2018 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
