Lithuania took floor at Human Right Council

On 11 September 2018, the Delegation of Lithuania at the 39th session of the UN Human Rights Council took floor in the general debate on the oral update by the High Commissioner H. E. Michelle Bachelet.

The Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the UN Office and other International Organizations in Geneva Ambassador Andrius Krivas warmly welcomed the new High Commissioner, expressed Lithuania’s full support and cooperation in implementing High Commissioner’s mandate and in meeting the awaiting challenges in dealing with worldwide human rights agenda, especially in the areas of women’s rights, safety of journalists, human rights in conflict areas and protection of human rights defenders.

Lithuania is proud of the joint initiatives in the area of violence against women, that were raised in the past in close partnership between the President of Lithuania and current Chair of the Council of Women World Leaders H. E. Dalia Grybauskaitė and H. E. Michelle Bachelet during her distinguished service as President of Chile. Building further on those efforts, Lithuania has initiated a high-level event on the Economic Growth through Women’s Empowerment, scheduled to take place on 27 September in the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York. In his speech, Ambassador Andrius Krivas conveyed an invitation of the President of Lithuania for the High Commissioner to participate in the event.

The Geneva-based Human Rights Council was established in 2006. Its 47 members are elected from among the UN Member States. Lithuania takes part in the work of the Council as observer. Lithuania has presented its candidacy to the Human Rights Council for the term 2022-2024.
