Lithuanian Expert To Chair Espoo Convention Implementation Committee

Mr. Romas Švedas, lecturer of Vilnius University Institute of International Relations and Political Science, was elected a Chairman of UN Espoo Convention Implementation Committee for the three years term (2017-2020) at the 39th session of the Committee (5-7 September 2017). During this term the Committee will also be comprised of Members from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Portugal, Sweden, Ukraine, Hungary, Finland and Czechia. The Parties of Espoo convention commit themselves to notify and consult each other regarding any major infrastructure projects with a potential transboundary environmental impact. The Espoo Convention is a key step aiming for more effective international cooperation to prevent transboundary environmental damage. The Implementation Committee is reviewing the compliance by the Parties and provides them with the recommendations and assistance for the full implementation of the commitments. Mr. Švedas has been working in the Implementation Committee since 2014.
