Lithuanian Permanent Representative in Geneva met the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

On 7 November, the Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva Ambassador Darius Staniulis met with the recently appointed UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.

The Ambassador congratulated the High Commissioner, who took up his duties on 17 October, on his appointment, reiterated Lithuania’s full support to his mandate and expressed its readiness to continue actively contributing to the protection and promotion of human rights globally.

D. Staniulis draw the High Commissioner‘s attention to the current challenges for human rights, particularly stressing the negative impact of Russia‘s war of aggression against Ukraine to multilateralism, international rules-based order and human rights globally, as well as the importance of documenting all related violations.

During the meeting, the role of human rights in the UN system was discussed, especially in light of the preparations for the UN Future Forum in 2024 and implementation of the sustainable development goals.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Türk was the Under-Secretary-General for Policy in the Executive Office of the United Nations Secretary-General where he coordinated global policy work.
