Lithuanian Permanent Representative Meets UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

On 2 September 2016, the Lithuanian Permanent Representative to the UN Office and other International Organisations in Geneva, Amb. Andrius Krivas, paid a courtesy visit to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein.

Among Lithuania’s priorities in the vast field of human rights, the Ambassador singled out in particular the human rights challenges in the neighbouring Eastern European region, gender equality issues, freedom of the media and, as part of it, safety of journalists. The interlocutors discussed Lithuania’s bid for membership on the UN Human Rights Council in 2022-2024 and the importance, in this context, of the Universal Periodic Review, this fall, of the human rights situation in Lithuania and the accreditation of a national human rights institution in accordance with the 1993 Paris principles relating to the status of national institutions.

The High Commissioner warmly remembered his visit to Lithuania in 2013 when he served as Jordan’s UN Ambassador in New York and the subsequent work, together with Lithuanian colleagues, on the UN Security Council.
