Lithuanian Special Envoy for Nuclear Safety Visits Geneva
On 30 January, Lithuanian MFA Ambassador-at-Large for nuclear safety issues Darius Degutis visited Geneva. He is in charge of coordinating Lithuania’s position in international fora on issues related to the Belarusian nuclear power plant construction in Astravets, in the immediate proximity of the Lithuanian capital city, Vilnius.
He met with the Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), Olga Algayerova, as well as with the heads and staff members of the Secretariats of the UN Espoo and Aarhus Conventions.
In the meetings, he presented the arguments behind Lithuania’s concern about the unsafe nuclear plant construction project that Belarus is implementing near Vilnius and discussed the procedures, according to which Lithuania’s international complaints about Belarus’ lack of compliance with procedural and technological regulations are being considered.
