On Lithuanian National Day, Diplomats Honor the Memory of Inter-War Lithuanian Prime Minister
On 16 February, the Independence Day of Lithuania, members of the Permanent Mission of Lithuania in Geneva traveled to the French town of Aix-les-Bains to visit the tomb of the prominent inter-war Lithuanian politician and diplomat Ernestas Galvanauskas (1882-1967).
The Permanent Representative of Lithuania in Geneva Ambassador Andrius Krivas and the Mayor of Aix-les-Bains Dominique Dord honored his memory by putting flowers to the tomb. Following Lithuania's declaration of independence in 1918, Ernestas Galvanauskas served as Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Finance, head of diplomatic missions in Geneva and London, represented Lithuania at important international negotiations. He played an outstanding role in the unification of the Klaipeda region with Lithuania. After World War Two, he briefly headed the Supreme Committee for Liberation of Lithuania. He spent 16 years of his life in Madagascar where he was involved in educational activities. He returned to France to spend the last years of his life at the thermal resort of Aix-les-Bains.
