Permanent Representative of Lithuania met with ICRC President

On 27 September, the Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the UN Office and other International Organisations in Geneva, Ambassador Andrius Krivas, made an office call on the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Peter Maurer. They discussed the role of the ICRC in ensuring compliance with the international humanitarian law, Lithuania-ICRC cooperation and today’s challenges to the implementation of the ICRC legal mandate in conflict zones.

Amb. A. Krivas offered condolences for the death of aid workers of the Syrian Red Crescent in last week’s bombing of the humanitarian convoy near Aleppo. The ambassador noted that Lithuania fully supports unlimited humanitarian access in conflict zones for humanitarian aid organizations.

Amb. A. Krivas expressed support and appreciation for ICRC activities in Ukraine’s Crimea and Donbass, where the ICRC is the only international humanitarian organization present on the ground. Peter Maurer thanked Lithuania for its contribution to the ICRC humanitarian operation in Eastern Ukraine, which is currently the 7th largest operation carried out by ICRC world-wide.
