Permanent Representative of Lithuania Met with IFRC Secretary General

On 8 November, the Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the UN Office and other International Organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Andrius Krivas, made an office call on the Secretary General of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Elhadj As Sy. They discussed the role of the IFRC in humanitarian assistance, Lithuania-IFRC cooperation and today’s challenges to the implementation of the IFRC mission.

The IFRC Secretary General noted that since the Second World War there has not been so many people in need for humanitarian assistance due to military conflicts, natural disasters and migratory flows. By coordinating the work of the national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies, not only does the IFRC assists countries in reconstruction efforts, but it also seeks to improve the resilience and preparedness of countries and local communities for various disasters. Today national societies have approximately 17 million volunteers working toward this goal.

Ambassador Krivas expressed Lithuania‘s support and appreciation for IFRC’s objectives, principles and world-wide activities in complex crisis situations and pledged to work toward strengthening interinstitutional cooperation in the field of humanitarian assistance.
