Permanent Representative of Lithuania Met with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees
On 11 October, the Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the UN Office and other International Organisations in Geneva, Ambassador Andrius Krivas, made an office call on the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi. They discussed global challenges posed by refugee crisis and cooperation with Lithuanian institutions.
Ambassador A. Krivas presented Lithuania‘s progress implementing the commitments to relocate refugees from Greece and Italy. The High Commissioner F. Grandi stressed that Lithuania sets a good example in the region by implementing its relocation commitments and noted that the European Union must maintain its role in granting international protection. The High Commissioner for Refugees also welcomed the changes made in Lithuanian legislation that embed non-appliance of detention measures to minors.
The High Commissioner for Refugees thanked Lithuania for the contribution to the UNHCR‘s humanitarian assistance programme in Afghanistan which assists Afghan refugees to voluntarily return from neighbouring countries.
The interlocutors positively assessed the results of the recent summit meetings in New York on migrants and refugees and expressed hope that the process started there will enable reaching a Global Compact on safe, regular and orderly migration.
