The UN Human Rights Committee publishes concluding observations on the fourth periodic report of Lithuania
On 26 July 2018 the UN Human Rights Committee published its findings on the civil and political rights record of Lithuania.
The Committee welcomed the submission of the fourth periodic report and the legislative and institutional measures taken by Lithuania to implement the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. It also expressed appreciation for the constructive dialogue. The Committee recommended Lithuania to intensify its efforts to ensure implementation of civil and political rights in the following areas: implementation of the Covenant and its Optional Protocol, discrimination against Roma, discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity, hate speech and hate crimes, persons with psychosocial or intellectual disabilities, equality between men and women, violence against women, migrants and asylum seekers, persons deprived of liberty, counterterrorism measures and secret detention, freedom of thought and belief, freedom of expression and association, protection of minors and rights of the child, dissemination of information relating to the Covenant.
Lithuania acceded to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights on 12 March 1991. The Human Rights Committee monitors implementation of the Covenant by its State parties. All states parties are obliged to submit regular reports to the Committee on how the rights are being implemented. On 10–11 July 2018 the Human Rights Committee considered Lithuania’s fourth periodic report. The fifth periodic report will be submitted by Lithuania by 27 July 2024.
