LITHUANIA SUPPORTS THE UN INITIATIVE WHICH SEEKS TO STRENGTHEN CIVIL SOCIETY

The Resolution on The Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and of Association was adopted by consensus at the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) which suspended its twenty-first session on the 28th of September. The resolution was initiated by the interregional core group which consists of the U.S, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Indonesia, Maldives, Mexico and Nigeria.

The Resolution is concerned with the restrictions of peaceful assembly and freedom of association, and also emphasizes the critical role of the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association for civil society. This Resolution was cosponsored by 60 other states.

Lithuania is not a member of the Human Rights Council, which is an inter-governmental body within the United Nations system made up of 47 States. Although Lithuania holds a status of observer at the HRC, it is a member of the European Union, which is one of the most actively operating groups at the HRC.
